A pipe bomb exploded yesterday outside the New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 41st Street, and two unexploded dynamite sticks with a ticking timing device were found outside the General Motors building at 59th and Madison.
Police said the design of the device found yesterday resembled one left by the group at 1270 Ave Americas in August. That device also failed to go off.
A stick and a half of dynamite, together with a detonator, were left inside a shoe box inside a wicker trash basket about 25 feet from the main entrance.
A drifter first found the dynamite while searching the basket. For unknown reasons he left one stick of dynamite and the timer in a nearby concrete tree planter. By chance, two FBI agents who were walking by noticed the dynamite and notified police.
The pipe bomb went off shortly after 4 PM in the fountain to the viewer’s left of the main entrance in the library’s east façade.

Woman Is Charged In FALN Blast
A 22-year-old woman identified through a fingerprint found at the site of the August 3rd bombing that killed one person and injured several others at the Mobil Oil Building in Manhattan was charged with the bombing yesterday.
The suspect was identified as Marie Haydee Beltran Torres. She and her husband, Carlos Alberto Torres are being sought by the authorities.
Commissioner Codd’s description Mrs. Torres, delivered in a flat tone of voice, was all the more dramatic for its brevity.
“She’s 22 years of age,” he said. “Her present address is unknown, and she is married.”
Police sources say the bomb set off at the Mobil Building’s street level employment offices was concealed in an umbrella placed on the coatrack at about 9:10am. It exploded at 10:42am killing Charles Steinberg, a partner in an employment service.
Chicago police found more than 200 sticks of dynamite and other material in the Torres apartment last November.

100,000 Leave New York Offices As Bomb Threats Disrupt City; Blasts Kill One and Hurt Seven
Terrorist bombs exploded in two midtown Manhattan office buildings yesterday morning, killing one man and injuring seven other persons, while dozens of bomb threats forced more than 100,000 people to evacuate their offices.
The entire twin towers of the World Trade Center were evacuated, as were seven floors of the Empire State Building. The self-styled FALN terrorist group took responsibility for the explosions, leaving a statement at the base of the statue of Jose Marti, the Cuban revolutionary in Central Park that called for the independence of Puerto Rico.
The evacuations caused traffic and pedestrian jams around the city, as entire streets and sidewalks were closed. Wherever fire and police vehicles gathered, throngs of people stood in the rain and pushed against wooden or rope barricades for a better view. Some people took advantage of the early quitting time to socialize in local bars, while thousands of others went home.
To date, investigators have linked 59 bombings to the group. The most devastating of which was the lunch-hour blast in January 1975 that shattered Fraunces Tavern in lower Manhattan, killing four persons and injuring 53.
Diners in the crowded restaurant, a historic landmark, where George Washington bade farewell to his officers, were hurled from their tables. One man was decapitated and other victims staggered bleeding into the streets.

FALN Claims Responsibility for 2 Bombings in New York City
A Puerto Rican nationalist group yesterday claimed responsibility for two bombings in New York City just after midnight Sunday, calling them actions against the FBI and the American Bank Note Company as “symbols of Yanki (sic) repression and exploitation.”
The group, whose name means Armed National Liberation Forces, also demanded release for four Puerto Rican nationalists who are in prison for 1954 shootings in Congress and another who is in prison for a 1950 attempt to assassinate President Harry S Truman.

FALN Blast Suspect May be Disguised as Woman
The New York City police said yesterday that a fugitive suspected of belonging to a Puerto Rican terrorist bomb group and of having had a “bomb factory” in his home might have disguised himself as a woman while in hiding.

Two Skyscrapers Damaged by Bombs in Mid-Manhattan
Two powerful bomb explosions extensively damaged the Chrysler and Gulf & Western Buildings (Columbus Circle) in midtown Manhattan last night. A lobby guard, Luis Carrera, said the explosion was “enormous” and had shaken the entire building. The police and firemen evacuated cleaning crews, night shift workers and patrons from the 43rd-florr restaurnant Top Of The Park.
